Gisela P. Concepcion
Gisela P. Concepcion is a Professor Emeritus of the University of the Philippines in Diliman. In 2019, she retired as Professor of The Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman where she taught graduate courses and led the Marine Natural Products Laboratory with research programs on marine biodiversity, natural products, drug discovery and related biomedical research. Her academic degrees are: B.S. Chemistry, M.S. Biochemistry, and Ph.D. Chemistry. In 2008, she was elected Academician of the Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), and In 2015, she was elected Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Dr. Concepcion served as Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of the Philippines System from February 2011 to February 2017. She has held key positions in scientific organizations and is the founder and co-editor of the Web of Science-listed, on-line, open access journal SciEnggJ (formerly Philippine Science Letters). She was also founder and editor of the weekly science column Star Science of the newspaper daily The Philippine Star. In 2006, she led the Philippine-American Academy of Science & Engineering (PAASE) in a campaign to increase government support for S&T which resulted in the establishment of the PhP1.7 billion National Science Complex in U.P. Diliman. Dr. Concepcion served as PAASE President in 2011 and again in 2020-21, and is current president of PAASE Foundation Philippines, Inc. She currently serves as Member-at-Large of the Governing Board of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP). She has received wide recognition and significant awards for her scientific publications, science advocacies, and academic and R&D administrative work in the university.
